Fryd-Day 2: Adapting a 13 yr-old's Design

Part 2 in a series exploring the adaptation of a childhood creation into a new comic!

Fryd was designed as an homage (read, '"rip off") of two of my favorite characters: The Rocketeer and Earthworm Jim.

In adapting Fryd, I wanted to maintain those qualities while sprinkling a little Milt Kahl goofiness.

One of the best things about growing as an artist is that you gain this library of visual reference in your brain. At the time I created Fryd, I had no idea how to draw a legitimate-looking flightcap, bomber jacket, riding britches, and flare gun (yes, that's a flare gun he's holding).

The clothing/prop aspects that I used to dread drawing as a kid are now some of my favorite things to draw, thanks to years of practice.

The final result is the updated Fryd design!

Of course, 13 yr-old me would be disappointed that I still can't render as well as Doug TenNapel or Dave Stevens.

 Dinosaur sketches. 'Nuff said.

I should note: these are not related to the Pixar dino film. It'd be sweet if they were, though!

Fryd-Day 1

I'm working with some friends on a graphic novel anthology called Childhood Heroes, wherein we will do modern takes on the characters we created as kids. My first comic creation was Fryd (pronounced "fried"), a crop-dusting vigilante who usually causes more harm than good.

For the next few Fridays, I'll be taking you through the process of adapting this childhood story into a new (and hopefully improved) graphic novel.

Look for Childhood Heroes at the TR!CKSTER event in San Diego this July, and look for more Fryd updates every Fryd-Day.

I promise the drawings will only get better!

March Madness

That's right, even the boys down at MU aren't immune to the effects of the madness!

I had the pleasure of participating in the brainstorm session for this one. Sketching gags of angry/disappointed monster jocks is no bad way to spend an afternoon!

Heather and I went to SXSW this weekend and quickly learned the value of having a badge.

Still, we had fun bar-hopping around my namesake city, catching bands and tagging vans.

Just doin' my part to keep Austin weird.

The long arm of the law is nothing to the cursed, necrotic stump of the degenerating degenerate, Darcy Hansen.

This is a second pass at a design I submitted to Everett Downing's 365 Supers blog, in honor of St. Patty's Day and Ev's recent completion of the 365 Supers project.

The Imp & The Pimp, Part 11 of 11

The final installment in a series of storyboards used as a portfolio to apply for a story position at Pixar.

Joffrey: "I am the King! Kings do not leap from buildings!"

Stark Soldier 1: "Make way, people!" Step aside!"

Stark Soldier 2: "Come 'ere, Lannisters! We'll have your heads for this!"

Tyrion: "Just aim for those bails of hay! They should be enough to break our fall!"

Joffrey: "Why am I even listening to you? I'm the King, and the King does what he--"

Tyrion: "We Jump."

Tyrion: "Looks like you'll get that roll in the hay after all, nephew!"

SFX: (Squish!)

Joffrey: "This is NOT hay."

Tyrion: "Get in the wheel barrow."

Tyrion: "Happy Nameday Joffrey!"

Joffrey: "I hate you."

I hope you've enjoyed the series! Can't wait for the ACTUAL Game of Thrones fun to recommence in a couple of weeks. Till then, remember to always pay your debts!

The Imp & The Pimp, Part 10 of 11

Part ten in a series of boards used as a portfolio to apply for a story position at Pixar.

Joffrey: "This is the worst nameday ever! When we get back to King's Landing, I'm going to have you thrown into the deepest, darkest dungeon!"

Tyrion: "IF, your grace. IF we make it back to King's Landing."

Tyrion: "You're assuming we escape this blazing inferno..."

Tyrion: "...and somehow circumvent those blood-thirsy Stark soldiers!"

Tyrion: "Though, at the moment, a cool shady dungeon sounds fairly pleasant!"

SFX: (dog barking)

SFX: (dog barking)

Stark Soldiers: "There they are! Up there!"

Tyrion: "I really wish you hadn't kicked that dog."

Next, the Conclusion: "The Ill-Fated King"
